Meralco belies 'national blackout' Twitter rumor
Manila Electric Co. on Tuesday stated that tweets hinting at a supposed "possible national blackout" caused by the heavy rains pounding Luzon were false.
In a post on its Twitter account, Meralco said it was only de-energizing areas that are severely flooded to ensure public safety.
"There is NO truth to a tweet that states of a possible national blackout. Meralco is ONLY de-energizing areas that are SEVERELY FLOODED," it said.
Meralco said all related tweets on the power supply situation should emanate from its official Twitter account.
Before 10 a.m., it said portions of España, New Manila, and a portion of La Loma in Manila are without power "as the Meralco Sampaloc substation has been de-energized due to severe flooding in the area."
Meralco likewise advised residents to turn off their main power switches if their homes are already flooded.
"Our crews have also already been deployed to attend to any trouble that may have affected our facilities serving your area. You can rest assured that we at Meralco are continuously monitoring the situation and are doing our best to provide power service without compromising public safety," it said.
Meralco also said that some prearranged power interruptions due to maintenance work have been canceled. — BM/DVM, GMA News
